Farmers’ markets on the beach

Vancouver lies in one of the most fertile areas in North America, and one of the benefits has been the large number of farmers’ markets offering some fantastic fresh produce. There are good reasons why these markets are popular and visitors come here to browse for special produce such as rainbow beets and heirloom tomatoes. The quality is much higher than what you will find in the grocery store and you may sample many of the delicacies on offer.

Kitsilano beach

Every Saturday morning, Kitsilano beach hosts a wonderful farmers’ market, one of the most exclusive markets in town. Practically all of the produce is organic and locally grown: try the Fraser Valley honey and organic strawberries. Delicious! For those who are not in the mood to cook, there are plenty of food trucks that sell delicious healthy snacks. And after indulging in an order of tasty crepes you can work off the calories by jogging along the beach. Or get ready to dance: live music gives the market a real laidback beach-vibe.

Trout Lake

The Trout Lake Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday morning by Trout Lake – one of the most popular parks in East Vancouver. Around 50 vendors offer their best wares, from specialty mushrooms and organic hazelnuts to green eggs and freshly ground flour. Founded in 1995, this market is very child-friendly. After the children have had their faces painted and played with their balloon animals, it’s time to peruse the great variety of beautifully displayed fruit and vegetables. Of course all the produce is organic. What to do with that crusty wholegrain loaf, fresh pesto and piece of goat cheese? Grab a bottle of organic wine and head out for a picnic on the beach. Those who arrive by bike can park with a real ‘bike valet’.
